TOP 5: Winter Beers
The holidays are a great time of year, and it's not just because of turkey and presents. Local breweries celebrate the season by putting out hearty, flavorful winter brews that are great to enjoy at holiday parties, apres ski, or alone in a cabin by a fire. Here are five of New England's best.

5. LONG TRAIL
HIBERNATOR ALE

(Bridgewater Corners, Vermont)

This popular ruby-colored, unfiltered Scottish ale includes chocolate and caramel malts, creating a smooth, easy-to-drink beer.

4. GRITTY MCDUFF'S
CHRISTMAS ALE

(Portland, Maine)

Gritty's Christmas Ale is a robust E.S.B. (Extra Special Bitter) with a dark, amber color and a full-bodied, malty taste with a slightly roasted undertone.

3. HARPOON BREWING COMPANY
WINTER WARMER

(Boston, Massachusetts)
One of the classic New England winter ales, the most distinguishable aspect of Winter Warmer is its hint of cinnamon. The finish of the beer is a blend of cinnamon and nutmeg, giving it a balanced, pumpkin-pie flavor.

2. OTTER CREEK
WINTER ALE

(Middlebury, Vermont)

Some people are afraid of fruity flavors in their beer, and often for good reason. Too much sweetness can overpower the beer and make it taste like a juice box. But, done right, fruit flavor can be a good thing. With their winter ale, Otter Creek has done it right. Their smooth brown ale has just a hint of raspberry, striking a perfect balance between flavor and "beerness," resulting in an exceptionally enjoyable brew.

1. BERKSHIRE BREWING COMPANY
CABIN FEVER ALE

(Deerfield, Massachusetts)

With Cabin Fever, BBC has created an amazingly smooth and flavorful ale. From its copper amber coloring pleasing your eye, to its malty caramel taste pleasing your palate, it is the premier winter beer to enjoy on a cold New England night.
