TOP 5:
Adventure Races

If you want to find out what you're made of, there's no better way than a challenging adventure race. With a dash of fun, and a heaping helping of grueling punishment, here are five or our favorites.

5. Mount Washington Road Race
Mount Washington, New Hampshire

This race up the Mount Washington Auto Road is 7.6 miles long, has an average grade of 11.5 percent with extended sections of 18 percent, and the last 50 yards is a 22 percent "wall" to the finish. The course rises 4,650 vertical feet from start to finish, but relax . . . there's only one hill.

4. Josh Billings Runaground
Great Barrington, Massachusetts

The "Josh" is the second-oldest bike, canoe/kayak, run triathlon in the world. It begins with a 27-mile scenic, but challenging, bike ride, followed by a 5-mile canoe or kayak sprint, and is completed with a 6.2-mile run ending at Tanglewood in Lenox.

3. The Bitter Pill Adventure Race
Vermont

The Bitter Pill is a 12-hour adventure race for teams of two or three. Disciplines include mountain biking, trekking, swimming, and canoeing. Navigation with topographical map and compass are a crucial part of the entire course.

2. Blackburn Challenge
Gloucester, Massachusetts

The Blackburn Challenge is the East Coast's premier open-water, human-powered boat competition. It's a grueling, 20-mile challenge sending rowers and paddlers around Cape Ann.

1. Pittsfield Peaks Death Race
Pittsfield, Vermont
You can expect barbed wire, mud boggin', wood choppin', tunnels, deep-water diving, running, crawling, crying, screaming, and sweating. Doubtful you'll finish but be proud of yourself for trying. There's a 24-hour time limit to finish.
