Adventure Races
If you want to find out what you're made of, there's no better
way than a challenging adventure race. With a dash of fun, and a heaping helping
of grueling punishment, here are five or our favorites.

Mount Washington Road
Race
Mount Washington, New Hampshire
This race up the Mount Washington Auto Road is 7.6 miles long, has an
average grade of 11.5 percent with extended sections of 18 percent, and
the last 50 yards is a 22 percent "wall" to the finish. The course rises
4,650 vertical feet from start to finish, but relax . . . there's only
one hill.

Josh Billings Runaground
Great Barrington, Massachusetts
The "Josh" is the second-oldest bike, canoe/kayak, run triathlon in the
world. It begins with a 27-mile scenic, but challenging, bike ride,
followed by a 5-mile canoe or kayak sprint, and is completed with a
6.2-mile run ending at Tanglewood in Lenox.

The Bitter Pill Adventure Race
Vermont
The Bitter Pill is a 12-hour adventure race for teams of two or three.
Disciplines include mountain biking, trekking, swimming, and canoeing.
Navigation with topographical map and compass are a crucial part of the
entire course.

Blackburn Challenge
Gloucester, Massachusetts
The Blackburn Challenge is the East Coast's premier open-water,
human-powered boat competition. It's a grueling, 20-mile challenge
sending rowers and paddlers around Cape Ann.

Pittsfield Peaks Death
Race
Pittsfield, Vermont
You can expect barbed wire, mud boggin', wood choppin', tunnels,
deep-water diving, running, crawling, crying, screaming, and sweating.
Doubtful you'll finish but be proud of yourself for trying. There's a
24-hour time limit to finish.
