Get Out(fitted)

The safest - and perhaps most fun - way to enter the realm of whitewater is with folks who know what they're doing. Here are some of the region's best whitewater outfitters.

Zoar Outdoor (www.zoaroutdoor.com)
Massachusetts
Based in the gorgeous Berkshires along the Deerfield River, Zoar has been running whitewater rafting trips and kayak clinics since 1989. But their adventure opportunities go beyond whitewater, with rock-climbing classes, bike rentals, and zip-line canopy tours.

New England Outdoor Center (www.neoc.com)
Maine
Located in Millinocket, in the shadow of Mount Katahdin, the New England Outdoor Center offers everything from adrenaline-pumping whitewater adventures to slow, leisurely family trips. When not on the water, you'll find hiking trails and amazing wildlife viewing.

Crab Apple Whitewater (www.crabapplewhitewater.com)
Vermont, Massachusetts, Maine
Crab Apple features three locations and a boatload (pardon the pun) of whitewater possibilities. Along the West River in Southern Vermont, trips feature Class II-IV whitewater and spectacular scenery. In Massachusetts, trips along the Deerfield River and Millers River in the Berkshires range from Class IV rapids to gentle family trips. Up in Maine, their trips feature Class III-IV whitewater on the Kennebec and Dead.

Three Rivers Whitewater (www.threeriverswhitewater.com)
Maine
Three Rivers features rafting on the Class V Penobscot, inflatable kayaking on the Dead and Seboomook Rivers, and even a combo sky-diving, whitewater rafting trip.
