ALGONQUIN TRAIL (New Hampshire)
Near New Hampshire's Waterville Valley, the Algonquin Trail cuts through the western portion of the Sandwich Range Wilderness. Along the way, this strenuous route rewards hikers with some tremendous views. The trail - featuring plenty of open ledges - climbs over Black Mountain and continues on to ascend Sandwich Dome, which is just shy of 4,000 feet but has better views than many higher peaks.
