WRITER'S GUIDELINES
Welcome to
SixStates.net, the online magazine dedicated to
covering the activities, people, sports and news of the New
England outdoors. All of our stories focus on New
England. To that end, we look for articles on outdoor sports and
adventure travel, news on environmental issues and outdoor
recreation, events, local pubs and breweries, and profiles of
outdoor characters. To get an idea for our subject matter,
examine the stories we run and study our links and events
sections.
We want stories that
are descriptive, thoroughly reported and (when appropriate)
feature a strong, narrative voice. Our articles run
anywhere from 300 to 3,000 words.
Even if you are a
writer currently without any story ideas for the site, feel free
to contact us anyway as we are looking for writers willing to
take on assignments. When contacting us, please include any
applicable writing samples.
To submit a query or
story, e-mail us at
editors@sixstates.net.
Queries should not be a mere topic or idea, but rather present a
clear, provocative thesis. When sending a query, please include
two or three writing samples. We respond to writers within eight
weeks. We pay $25 per story. When we agree to publish a story, we will
feature it on our website. Afterwards, the story will be
available in our archives. Writers retain all other rights to
their stories.
PHOTOGRAPHER'S GUIDELINES
Besides our
articles,
SixStates.net
also runs individual photos and photo essays of the New England
outdoors. We accept previously published photographs. When we agree to
publish a photo, we will feature it on our website. Afterwards,
the photograph will be available in our archives. Photographers
retain all other rights to their photos. To discuss submitting
your photographs to
SixStates.net,
e-mail us at
editors@sixstates.net.
BECOME A CONTRIBUTING EDITOR
SixStates.net
is currently looking for volunteers to contribute to the
editorial side of the website. As this is a nonpaying, volunteer
role, ideal candidates would be journalism students, interns
and/or serious outdoors enthusiasts. Duties will be determined
by the applicant’s interests, but may include contributing to
the site’s events calendar, links directory, proofreading,
writing articles, covering specialty topics, specific regions,
etc. To discuss the role of contributing editor, e-mail us at
editors@sixstates.net. |
