A Cure For Gas Pains?

Massachusetts's first hydrogen refueling station opens in Billerica.

A company that makes hydrogen fuel cells has opened Massachusetts's first hyrdrogen refueling station. According to an article in yesterday's Boston Globe, Nuvera Fuel Cells opened the PowerTap on Monday in Billerica, where the company is based.

As part of the PowerTap's opening ceremonies, nine cars were filled up on hydrogen fuel. The cars are currently taking part in a 13-day cross-country road tour aimed at promoting hydrogen power.

There won't be any long lines at the PowerTap anytime soon. Most manufacturers say they don't expect to have models in showrooms for another two to seven years. But advocates say the time for the hydrogen-powered car is coming. They say the cars only emit water vapor and are much cheaper to fuel than gas. Companies are beginning to open stations like the PowerTap now so that when hydrogen cars do hit the road, they will have a place to fuel up.
