New England's Bigfoot
Believe it or not, reports of sasquatch creatures can be
found throughout New England.
Sure,
the Georgia Bigfoot report that set the news world abuzz last week
turned out to be a hoax (of course). But that doesn’t mean Bigfoot
doesn’t exist. In fact, according to many reports, many sasquatch make
their home right here in New England.
According to the
Bigfoot Field Researchers
Organization (BFRO), a leading sasquatch authority, New
England and the other northeastern states have a history of sightings,
some dating back to colonial times.
On the BFRO site, biologist and BFRO investigator John Perry points out
that the northernmost New England states of Vermont, New Hampshire and
Maine, while relatively small in size individually, have combined land
areas of roughly 49,000 square miles. When you add in the land areas of
New Brunswick, Quebec, upstate New York, and western Massachusetts, you
have hundreds of thousands of square miles of wilderness, which, he
says, is
plenty of habitat to support more than a few sasquatch. And according
to many witnesses, it does.
[Think a sasquatch could live in New
England?
Discuss it in our forum.]
The area along the border of
Vermont and New York has had reported sightings dating back to the French and
Indian Wars and up to the present. That includes one of the country's most compelling
cases in the past few decades, when police officers in Whitehall, New
York, near the border with Vermont, witnessed a Bigfoot-like creature in
1976.
Even way back in 1879, a New York Times article reported two Vermont
hunters were frightened when they came across a creature that resembled
a man in form and movement, but was covered all over in red hair and had
wild eyes.
Several reports on the BFRO site list encounters with a sasquatch-like
creature around October Mountain in the Berkshires of Massachusetts in
recent years. The rural area encompassed between Durham and Woolwich,
Maine, has exhibited sasquatch activity, including several separate
reports of visual sightings over the past 30 years. A family reported
seeing a very tall, skinny creature covered in red hair and walking on
two legs near Wilsons Mills, Maine, in 1998. In October 2005, a father
and daughter looking for moose near Ludlow, Vermont, reported seeing a
bipedal, hairy, tall creature that crossed the road in front of them in
two steps. And in New Hampshire in 1987, the Concord Monitor ran
an article about an experienced hunter named Walter Bower Sr. who swore
he saw a sasquatch while hunting pheasant in Salisbury. Many locals
laughed at him. Bower responded, "I don't like to be made a fool of. But
I know what I saw."
In fact, every state
in New England lists compelling cases of sightings. Even little Rhode
Island has several cases in which people give consistent reports of seeing a white ape-like
creature.
Maybe it’s all bunk. Maybe it’s all wild imagination. But whatever it
is, it is certainly something to ponder next time you’re exploring New
England’s remote woodlands. That big hairy dude you run into might be
more than a product of bad grooming.
