Swamped Kayaker Rescued

A kayaker who was swamped by a large wave survived 45 minutes in the water off Provincetown, Massachusetts, yesterday before being rescued by the Coast Guard, according to a report in the Cape Cod Times.

Rick Merrill of Newton, Massachusetts, was paddling with his friend Zach Carwile of Boston, when a large wave hit Merrill's kayak and began filling it with water. Merrill, who has kayaked for 12 years, said he's never had anything like this happen to him before. Still, he was prepared, wearing a lifejacket and carrying extra rope, a whistle and his cell phone, which he threw to Carwile.

After trying to paddle and then tow his partially submerged kayak, Merrill swam while Carwile paddled. But after his body began cramping in the 69-degree water, Carwile phone the Provincetown police, and the two were soon picked up by the Coast Guard.
