Maine's Cleaner - And More Annoying - Environment

Thanks to a cleaner environment, Maine's black fly population is surging, according to an article in today's Boston Globe.

The annoying insects that are often seen as a curse by hikers and paddlers are becoming more abundant, states the report, because Maine's rivers and streams are cleaner today than in years past, providing ideal breeding grounds for the flies. The article stated that when the rivers were filled with contaminants, only the hardiest flies were able to breed in them.

Despite the annoyance, Maine officials say they won't mess with nature to provide any relief from the flies, as a clean environment with annoying pests is preferable to a contaminated, fly-free environment.
