Greylock Minus The Hordes

Road work closes Massachusetts' highest peak to road traffic until 2009.

by Dan Mathers

If you like hiking Massachusetts’ Mount Greylock, but have shied away because of the summit’s crowds, now is your window of opportunity.

The road to Greylock’s summit in North Adams, which is often busy with car traffic during the summer and autumn months, is now closed. Wendy Fox, press secretary for the state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation, said the road, which was suffering from erosion, is being repaired and likely won’t be reopened until at least the spring of 2009.

What that means is if you’re a hiker who hates sharing summits with loud, outdoors-challenged drivers, you want to hike Greylock now.

During the construction, the summit’s Bascom Lodge and the Veterans War Memorial Tower are closed. But, Fox says, the Visitors Center will remain open.

For information on trails and camping on Greylock, check out the DCR website.
