In April, the
Surfrider Foundation’s Connecticut Chapter celebrated Earth Day by
selecting a winner in their statewide Storm Drain Marker Contest. The
Surfrider Foundation invited Connecticut students, grades 6 thru 8, to
create a design for a storm drain marker that would remind the public
that any pollution entering the drains eventually ends up in waterways.
This year’s winner was Jillian Carter, an eighth grader at Our Lady of
Fatima School, Wilton, Connecticut. Jillian received a prize of $50, the
town of Wilton received the markers to be applied to their storm drains,
and Jillian’s class received a seminar on the Long Island Sound
Watershed.
The contest was made possible through a grant given to the Surfrider
Foundation by New Haven’s BAR Restaurant. Jeff Browning of BAR awarded
the grant, noting the importance of supporting local organizations that
both educate children, and act to preserve the environment.
The Connecticut Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation is comprised of
volunteers who are dedicated to the protection and restoration of
Connecticut’s waterways, wetlands, watersheds, and beaches. If you are
