Wolf Found In Massachusetts

An eastern gray wolf killed in Shelburne, Massachusetts, is the first wolf found in the state in more than 160 years.

According to an article in today's Boston Globe, a wild gray wolf has been found in Massachusetts for the first time since hunters drove them out of the state more than 160 years ago.

Officials with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have confirmed that genetic tests done on an 85-pound animal killed on a farm in Shelburne last fall showed the animal was an eastern gray wolf. And, they say, they have no indication that the wolf was ever held in captivity.

The last time a purebred wolf that did not live in captivity was found anywhere in New England was in Maine in 1992. The closest established wolf populations are in Ontario and Quebec.
