Globe Supports Making
Negligent Hikers Pay For Rescues

In an editorial on Sunday, the Boston Globe supported a proposal by the New Hampshire legislature that would make more hikers who need to be rescued in the White Mountains have to repay the state for the costs of that rescue. (See last week's Negligent Hikers article.)

The editorial said the current standard for what is "reckless" is so high that rescued hikers are rarely made to repay the state. Citing an increase in the number of rescue calls in recent years, and an increase in the costs behind those rescues, the Globe said hikers need to be held responsible when they fail to stay on a trail or fail to anticipate changes in weather.
